Tracks in the Snowy Forest (Final Volume)

page01

"Tracks in the Snowy Forest" (林海雪原) is a celebrated Chinese adventure novel set in the winter of 1946, during the Chinese Civil War. It tells the story of a small People's Liberation Army (PLA) squad tasked with eliminating entrenched bandit forces in the snowy mountains of Northeast China. This is the third and final volume of the comic book adaptation. In this concluding installment, Squad Leader Shao Jianbo and his heroic scout Yang Zirong lead their team on their most dangerous mission yet: to track down and confront the main bandit forces led by the cunning Ma Xishan in a final, decisive battle.

This is the third volume of the three-part comic book series "Tracks in the Snowy Forest." It depicts Squad Leader Shao Jianbo leading his small unit deep into the Suifen Dadianzi region and across the vast, snow-covered Jimir Prairie. They engage in a battle of wits with the bandit chiefs Ma Xishan and Hou Diankun, and finally, they completely and cleanly annihilate the bandits at the Li Li Palace. The story further extols the heroic qualities of figures like Jianbo, Zirong, and Xuncang—their ingenuity, courage, foresight, and love for the people—demonstrating the invincible power of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

  1. One deep night after Minister Yan's departure from Jiapigou, Jianbo also led the small squad away from the village in secret. Freshly fallen snow covered their tracks, and no one knew where they were headed.

2. In a pristine, primeval forest where no one had ever set foot, the squad was caught in a blizzard that lasted for several days, making it impossible to advance. On this day, they suddenly heard a few barks from a dog, which in turn caused several of their horses to neigh.

3. Jianbo saw a large dog running towards them. He had a soldier toss out a piece of frozen meat. The dog sniffed it but didn't eat. Jianbo personally tossed out a second and then a third piece of meat, but the dog still refused to eat, though it drew closer and closer.

4. Following the dog was a skier gliding like a swallow. He glared at Jianbo and demanded, "Who are you?" When he heard Jianbo reply in bandit jargon, he raised his gun and said, "You go your way, I'll go mine. Turn around, now."

5. To de-escalate the situation, Jianbo took off his hat with one hand and ran the other through his hair, saying warmly, "We're all people of the forest. Let's talk things over before we part ways." The man replied, "I'm going to count to three. If you don't leave, I'll shoot!" His demeanor grew even more agitated.

6. As the man shouted the word "Two," Liu Xuncang and Zirong had already disarmed him. Seeing its master captured, the dog lunged at Xuncang, but it was driven away by the squad's soldiers.

7. The man struggled desperately, shouting, "Sai Hu! Sai Hu!" The dog immediately turned back to rescue its master. Jianbo stopped a soldier who was about to shoot the dog and said to the man, "Friend, please tell your dog to stop barking, otherwise we may be forced to harm it."
(The dog's name, 赛虎 (Sài Hǔ), means "Fiercer than a Tiger.")

8. Hearing the words "forced to harm it," the man's expression changed. He stopped struggling and blew two sharp whistles. The dog immediately stood by his side, glaring angrily at the squad members.
